UNE’s 2nd Half Strike Enough to Top Farmington

FARMINGTON, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington men's soccer team battled the University of New England through a scoreless opening half, but the Nor'easters broke through in the second half and held on for a 1-0 victory over the Beavers on Sunday afternoon at Leib Field.

The Records:

Farmington moved to 0-3-1 overall following the loss while the University of New England improved to 3-2-1 on the season with the victory.

How it Happened:

Both teams battled through a scoreless opening half, with Farmington generating several scoring opportunities but unable to find the back of the net. 

The Beavers created early pressure as Garrett Gendreau (Waterville, Maine) tested New England goalkeeper Kaden Pare in the fourth minute, but Pare turned aside the shot to keep the game scoreless.

Farmington continued to threaten throughout the opening half, with Owen Spera (Gorham, Maine) registering three shots and Star Boma (Caribou, Maine) adding three shots of his own. 

Gendreau looked to give the Beavers the early lead when blasted a shot off the cross bar from 30-plus yards in the 15th minute, but the ball never crossed as the game stayed knotted up at zero.

After a scoreless half that saw the Beavers control a majority of the play, including hold a 10-4 advantage in shots, The Nor'easters were able to turn the tides and broke through in the 65th minute. Corbin Schreindorfer scored his third goal of the season, heading home a cross off a corner kick from Matthew Dewhurst that bounced across the front of the net onto the head of the wide open Schreindorfer to give New England a 1-0 advantage.

Farmington continued to push for the equalizer after falling behind. JJ Greenlaw (Farmington, Maine) had an opportunity to knot the game up at one when he forced Pare into a save from point blank range in the 75th minute that kept the Nor'Easters in the lead.

New England was reduced to 10 players in the 70th minute when Ryan Wargo was issued a red card, giving Farmington a man advantage for the final 20 minutes of play. The Beavers continued to apply pressure but could not find the equalizer.

The Goalkeepers:

Dylan Gagnon (Hudson, N.H.) made six saves in the hard-fought loss for the Beavers. Kaden Pare made three saves in goal for the Nor'easters to earn the shutout victory.

UP NEXT

The Beavers will return to North Atlantic Conference action on Wednesday, returning to the road where they will travel to take on Wentworth at 6:00 PM.
