Women's soccer streak snapped

FARMINGTON -- The University of Maine at Farmington women's soccer team's unbeaten streak was snapped at 13 games on Wednesday as Bates College handed the Beavers a 3-0 setback at Prescott Field in Farmington's regular season finale.

The Beavers, who earlier in the day were announced as the top seed in the North Atlantic Conference playoffs, finished the regular season at 13-4-1 and are scheduled to host Johnston State in NAC quarterfinal action on Saturday. The Bobcats improved to 3-10 and are scheduled to visit Colby on Saturday.

Ali Emery (Richmond, VT) gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead at 18:57 into the contest. Kim Suvak (Winchester, MA) sent a header to an all-alone Emery at the far post. Emery punched the ball into the back of the net for the advantage.

The Bobcats padded their lead to 2-0 at 68:24 when Emery knocked in a corner kick by Molly Wagner (Longmeadow, MA) . Wagner offered Bates insurance at 74:57 when her towering shot escaped the outstretched arms of Farmington goalkeeper Kerry Kowalczyk (Topsham, ME) for a 3-0 command.

Melissa Demerchant (Presque Isle, ME) manned the pipes for the Beavers in the first half with a pair of stops. Kowalczyk made one save in 34:27 in goal with Ashley Holshouser (Berwick, ME) coming up with a save over the final 10:33.

Bates goalkeeper Nini Spaulding (San Francisco, CA) turned back two shots in the shutout. The Bobcats held a 15-5 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
