FARMINGTON -- Chelsea Norton (Westbrook, ME) scored twice and Bethany Charles (New Vineyard, ME) notched her first collegiate goal as the freshman duo helped the University of Maine at Farmington women's soccer team blank the University of Maine at Presque Isle 3-0 at Prescott Field Wednesday.
The Beavers ran their record to 4-3 with the non-conference win and are scheduled to host North Atlantic Conference foe Bay Path at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Owls slipped to 2-5 and are slated to visit Unity on Oct. 4.
After a barrage of chances -- including an Amber Murphy (Manchester, NH) bid tipped over the crossbar by UMPI netminder Billie Martin (Caribou, ME) and a Charles shot off the post -- UMF got onto the scoreboard at 31:01 when Julie Walters (Wells, ME) slid the ball to Norton on a 2-on-1 and Norton found the corner for a 1-0 lead at intermission.
Norton increased the lead to 2-0 at 51:37 when Martin made the initial sliding stop on a Norton boot, but the rebound skidded back to Norton, who punched it in. Charles completed the scoring at 84:32 by knocking in a Jessica Timmreck (Brunswick, ME) feed for the 3-0 win.
UMF goalkeeper Kerry Kowalczyk (Topsham, ME) made two saves as the Beavers controlled the majority of the contest with a 36-3 command in shots and a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Martin finished with 18 saves for the Owls.
