FARMINGTON -- The University of Maine at Farmington fell 2-1 via penalty strokes to Castleton State College in North Atlantic Conference field hockey action today at Prescott Field.
The Beavers (8-7 overall, 5-2) and Spartans (8-9, 6-1) await the NAC playoff seedings, which are scheduled to be released later this evening
Kealy Chipman (Bellows Falls, VT), Jessica Scott (Poultney, VT) and Marie Amaral (Barre, VT) converted penalty stroke attempts for Castleton, while Spartan keeper Siobhan Whittemore (Springfield, VT) blocked two attempts. Alyssa St. Pierre (Jay, ME) had the lone conversion for Farmington.
Ashley Wentworth (North Berwick, ME) opened the scoring for the Beavers 5:07 into the contest when the senior took control of the ball at midfield and weaved through the Spartan defense for a goal. Molly Fraher (Goshen, CT) tied the game with a goal off a Courtney Nolan (Spring Lake Heights, NJ) penalty corner at 20:33.
The Spartans rode the momentum of the tying score to fire off six shots and take five penalty corners over the final five minutes of the opening half, but Farmington keeper Sarah Brown (Windham, ME) made three saves and Emma Deans (Gorham, ME) helped with a pair of defensive stops in keeping the game at 1-1 at halftime.
Farmington weathered seven minutes with a man down due to a yellow card, but was able to maintain the tie and use the stop to gain momentum. Despite advantages in shots (7-2) and penalty corners (9-6) in the second half, the Beavers were unable to break the stalemate.
Farmington stayed with the advantages in the two 15-minute overtimes (7-5 shots, 10-0 penalty corners). Deans was stopped three times by Whittemore in the overtimes.
Castleton had two breakaways by Nolan in the first extra session. On the first attempt, Farmington's Samantha Webster (Dixfield, ME) was able knock the ball away, but the second bid featured Brown coming out the goal and hitting the ball away, but Nolan gaining control with Webster making a defensive save to preserve the tie.
Brown recorded nine saves for the Beavers. The Spartans finished with edges in shots (21-18) and corners (21-19)
Whittemore made eight saves, five of which came in the two overtimes.
