Field hockey advances to title game

Box Score

The third-seeded University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team ousted No. 2 Castleton State College 2-0 in the North Atlantic Conference semifinals at Spartan Stadium this afternoon.

Farmington (10-7) is scheduled to host No. 4 Husson University (a 2-1 winner over top seed St. Joseph's in penalty strokes) in the NAC title game on Saturday. Game time is to be announced. The Spartans finished their season at 9-10.

Hattie Agnew (Guilford, ME) scored a pair of goals to lead the Beavers to the victory.

Agnew broke a scoreless tie 8:08 into the first half when she stuck her sixth goal off a rebound. Ashley Wentworth (North Berwick, ME) had the initial shot that Castleton goalie Siobhan Whittemore (Springfield, VT) deftly turned away, but Agnew was waiting on the left post to knock it past Whittemore's second dive.

Castleton regained some momentum late in the first half, and nearly tied the contest on several occasions. Molly Fraher (Goshen, CT) and Marie Amaral (Barre, VT) both pushed shots just wide off Castleton penalty corners with less than 10 minutes remaining. With just over six minutes remaining Fraher and Stephanie Paproski (Newtown, CT) each put shots on net, but Farmington goalie Sarah Brown (Windham, ME) was able to turn both attempts away to keep the 1-0 lead into halftime.

The game remained 1-0 until Agnew struck again, just over 11 minutes into the second half, redirecting an Emma Deans (Gorham, ME) assist past Whittemore. Deans sent a rocket in at the cage from just outside the circle, and Agnew got just enough of her stick on it to redirect the ball inside the right post.

Castleton once again pressed, and nearly cut the lead in half, but three-straight saves by Brown on shots from Amaral and Heather Brock (Bow, NH) extinguished the threat.

Farmington held a slight 13-12 edge in shots, but put nine on goal to Castleton's six both teams also attempted nine penalty corners each.

Brown stopped all six shots that came at her cage, earning the shutout.

Whittemore ended up with seven saves in the loss.
