Box Score AMHERST, Mass. -- Eric Taylor (Oakland, Maine) scored a game-high 24 points to lead the University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team to a 67-60 win over Wells College Saturday afternoon in the Amherst College Ken Wright Memorial Invitational consolation game.
The Beavers improved to 1-1 and are scheduled to visit St. Joseph's College Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Standish, while the Express drop to 0-3.
Taylor knocked down a pair of clutch free throws and followed with a difficult reverse layup to put the game out of reach with less than three minutes to play. For his efforts, Taylor was named to the All-Tournament Team, joining Terry Harrison of Wells. Harrison finished the game with a team-high 17 points, nine rebounds and four steals.
Wells jumped out to a 10-2 lead on a three-pointer by Benito Perez, but Farmington would score the game's next seven points before taking a 13-12 advantage on a layup by Ben Johnson. Wells regained the lead at 16-15 thanks to a pair of free throws from Israel Garcia and would lead the remainder of the half, taking a 28-27 advantage into the locker room.
Farmington quickly took the lead back in the early going of the second half when Taylor knocked down a jumper to make it a 29-28 contest. The Beavers would pull away and lead by as many as 12, but Wells made things interesting with a big five-point swing that ended when Garcia capitalized on a steal by burying a three, cutting the deficit to 58-53 with 4:40 to play. The Express could have cut it to three points, but they missed two free throws and allowed Taylor to take over from there, as Farmington hung on for the 67-60 result.
Taylor had six rebounds and two blocks to go along with his 24 points as the only Beaver in double digits. Pet Sumner (Cramerton, Maine) and Ben Johnson (Manchester, Maine) each added nine points for Farmington.
Joining Harrison in double figures from Wells was Mabior Mayen, who recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards. Dave Foltz added 11 points, while Benito Perez had 10 rebounds.
