Box Score WATERVILLE -- Thomas College used a 16-2 first-half run to sink the University of Maine at Farmington 98-75 in the North Atlantic Conference men's basketball season opener for both squads tonight.
The Beavers (4-7, 0-1) are scheduled to visit Vermont this weekend to face NAC opponents Castleton (Friday, 7:30 p.m.) and Green Mountain (Saturday, 4 p.m.). The Terriers even their record at 5-5 (1-0).
Andrew Dean (Gorham, Maine) tallied 18 points to lead Farmington, while Eric Taylor (Oakland, Maine) pitched in 12 points. The Beavers were doomed by the Terriers shooting on the floor (Farmington 29-61, 47.5, Thomas 35-63, 55.6) and from the foul line (Farmington 11-23, 47.8, Thomas 18-19, 94.7).
Jarrad DeVaughn tallied 22 points (18 in the first half) to lead the Terriers with Stanley Greene Jr. adding 15 points, Andrew Duncanson 14 points and Ryan Newton 12 points.
Thomas' 98-point total is the most allowed by Farmington in regulation since a 99-75 loss at Plymouth State on Jan. 13, 2005.
With the game tied at 25 in the first half, the Terriers blitzed the Beavers with a 16-2 jaunt that spanned 4:34. Thomas hit four 3-pointers in the stretch with a pair of Antonio Juco foul shots giving the hosts a 41-27 command with 4:25 left in the half. Farmington got the lead down to 12 points, but a pair of DeVaughn threes bolstered Thomas' lead to 47-29 with a 50-32 halftime advantage.
The Beavers were unable to knock down the deficit any lower than 16 points in the second half and the Terriers used a 9-0 run to further distance themselves with a Franklin Salvador three with 6:50 to go in regulation giving Thomas an 85-58 cushion to cruise to the 98-75 victory.
