Box Score PORTLAND -- The University of Maine at Farmington women's lacrosse team opened its season this afternoon with an 11-3 non-conference loss to the University of Southern Maine at Memorial Field.
The Beavers (0-1) are scheduled to return to Memorial Field on Tuesday to take on St. Joseph's College. The game is set for a 4:30 p.m. start.
Mary Vaughan (Brunswick, Maine) scored a goal and assisted on four others as USM jumped out to a 7-1 lead en route to the victory. The win was the first of the season for the Huskies after two straight losses.
Amie Daniels (Lewiston, Maine) recorded two goals, and Alyssa Neptune (Readfield, Maine) had the other goal for Farmington, while Aimee St. Germain (Gorham, Maine) and Corinne Vierkant (Stow, Mass.) each made an assist.
Farmington goalie Hannah Goodenow (Freeport, Maine) stopped seven shots.
Lauren Santo (Salem, N.H.) scored three goals for Southern Maine while Jess Gassman (Kennebunk, Maine) and Samantha Purcell (Durham, Maine) each found the net twice.
USM's Kim Vogel (Sanford, Maine) registered 11 saves in her first collegiate start to pick up the win.
Santo got the Huskies on the board in the second minute of play before Vaughan set up goals by senior Erica Higginbotham (Winthrop, Mass.) and Gassman over the next two minutes. Vaughan scored her only goal off a pass from Jacki Kelly (Brunswick, Maine) before Santo converted a free-position attempt to stake the Huskies to a 5-0 lead less than eight minutes into the game.
Daniels broke the string for UMF collecting a pass from St. Germain and beating Vogel in the 22nd minute. Purcell scored twice, both times off passes from Vaughan, before the end of the half to give USM a 7-1 edge at the break.
Gassman's second goal nine minutes into the second half made it 8-1. Daniels scored her second with 12 minutes to play before the Huskies tallied three times within a span of 1:39 to put the game away. Neptune scored inside two minutes to account for the final tally.
