Box Score GORHAM, Maine -- Tara Moore (Portland, Maine) scored the game-winning goal with 4:20 remaining in the second sudden-death overtime period to give the University of Southern Maine a 1-0 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington in a non-conference match played Wednesday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
The Beavers dropped their first decision of the season to slip to 1-1-1 and are scheduled to host Maine Maritime Academy Saturday to kick off North Atlantic Conference action (men at 1 p.m., women to follow). The win was the second straight for the Huskies and improved their overall record to 2-3.
Moore knocked a loose ball into the UMF goal after a service into the box from freshman Nicole Taylor (Standish, Maine) was misplayed. The goal was Moore's first of the season.
The Huskies would not have made it to the second overtime without a fine save by senior goalkeeper Kat Rothe (Leeds, Maine) with under 20 seconds to play in the first OT. Rothe parried a high, looping ball from Abbey Gilbert (Wilton, Maine) over the crossbar to keep the match scoreless and send it into the second extra period.
Three minutes into the second OT, UMF had another opportunity to win the match, but sophomore forward Renee Dupre's (Rehoboth, Mass.) shot over Rothe from the right side deflected off the crossbar. The Beavers also hit a cross bar in the first half.
Rothe finished the match with five saves to record her second clean sheet of the season.
UMF's Beth Lebel (Lewiston, Maine) stopped three shots. UMF had a slim 10-9 edge in shots and a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
