Box Score FARMINGTON, Maine – It came down to the final 10 minutes of regulation and a pair of outstanding individual efforts for the University of Maine at Farmington women's soccer team to put away a pesky UMaine-Machias squad, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Prescott Field.
Hanging on to a slim 1-0 lead late in the game, UMaine-Farmington (9-5-1) forward Ava Amador (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) fought through the center of the UMaine-Machias defense and put a blast into the back of the Clipper goal from the top of the 18-yard box in the game's 86th minute.
Just 16 seconds later, midfielder Kayla Tuttle (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) completed almost the exact same exercise, dribbling up the middle of the Machias defense and beating Clipper keeper Rebecca Young. Tuttle also scored UMaine-Farmington's first goal in the 42nd minute, dribbling into the 18 and putting a shot to the left of Young.
Tuttle's two goals on Sunday gave her 50 points (18 goals, 14 assists) for her career, a placing the junior midfielder 10th among UMaine-Farmington career points leaders.
UMaine-Farmington outshot UMaine-Machias, 32-5, but a stingy Clipper defense meant less than 50 percent of those shots (14) were actually on goal. The Beavers also had a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks taken.
"We had a little bit of trouble getting on the board, but I told the team at halftime to just trust themselves, keep playing the way they were playing, and it would come – and it did," said UMF head women's soccer coach Molly Wilkie. "I thought it was a great tribute to our senior class, which has been so strong and so steady over the past four years. I'm really happy that we could get the win for them."
Beavers keeper Beth Lebel (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) finished with three saves in the UMF goal, extending her streak to nearly 252 minutes without yielding a goal. Young tallied 11 saves for UMaine-Machias.
The win, UMaine-Farmington's ninth of the season, ties the 2012 squad for 10th among single season wins.
The Beavers will host Husson University on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 12:15 p.m. in UMF's final home regular season contest.
