USM spoils Beavers' season opener

GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Maine at Farmington women's lacrosse team opened its 2012 season with a 23-4 setback at the University of Southern Maine in a non-conference game at Hannaford Field.

The Beavers (0-1) are scheduled to visit Wheelock College for another non-conference tilt on March 18 at noon. The win was the second straight to open the 2012 season for the Huskies.

Maddi Kadnar (Belgrade, Maine) scored her first two collegiate goals for the Beavers, while Marisa Hanning (Hebron, Maine) also started her UMF career with a score. Emma Morrison (Saco, Maine) added a goal, eight draw controls and four ground balls in the loss, while Emma Daniel (Acton, Mass.) and Abbey Gilbert (Wilton, Maine) each forced a pair of turnovers.

Lauren Santo (Salem, N.H.) scored a game-high five goals and dished out three assists to lead the Huskies, while Jenna Cyr (Limerick, Maine), Jess Gassman (Kennebunk, Maine) and Shelby Turcotte (Lewiston, Maine) each had three goals and an assist.  In all, 12 different players had at least one goal for the Huskies.  Bridget FitzGerald (Concord, N.H.) had a strong game scooping up six ground balls and causing two UMF turnovers.

Hannah Goodenow (Freeport, Maine) made 12 saves for the Beavers.

Kim Vogel (Sanford, Maine) and Maggie Lane (Burlington, Mass.) split the USM goaltending chores.  Vogel played the first half and recorded seven saves.  Lane had one save over the final 30 minutes.

USM took command of the game early in the first half to build a 15-3 lead by halftime.  Turcotte and Gassman scored in the opening two minutes before Morrison got the Beavers on the board with 26:15 remaining.  The Huskies scored the next four goals before Kadnar found the net for the Beavers to make it 6-2.

Santo ignited a string of nine consecutive USM goals.  Santo was the lone USM player to score multiple goals in the run netting three. Kadnar snapped the run of USM goals with her second of the game inside the final minute of the half.

The Huskies controlled the game throughout the second half tacking on eight more goals before Hanning put a shot past Lane in the final minute.
