Women's soccer downs Maine Maritime in NAC opener

CASTINE, Maine – Three different players accounted for the scoring as the University of Maine at Farmington women's soccer team opened North Atlantic Conference play with a 3-1 win over Maine Maritime Academy, Sunday afternoon at Ritchie Field.

UMF improved to 3-1-0 overall, 1-0-0 in the North Atlantic Conference, with the win, while Maine Maritime fell to 2-4-0, 0-1-0 NAC with the loss. 

Freshman forward Shelby Bryant (South Portland, Maine/Catherine McAuley) netted the game winner with just over two minutes remaining in the first half with an unassisted marker.  Senior Alida Peake (Penobscot, Maine/George Stevens Academy) providing all the scoring either team would get in the second half, adding an insurance goal for the Beavers in the 57th minute. 

Freshman Meryl Bond (Jefferson, Maine/Erskine Academy) opened the scoring in the 13th minute, scoring off an assist by Rachel Clement (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester). 

Maine Maritime's Annie Koensgen knotted the game at 1-1 in the 31st minute, finishing a corner kick taken by Dani Holt.

UMF outshot Maine Maritime by a 34-5 total, and took six corner kicks to the Mariners' five. MMA keepers Taylor O'Malley and Kelsie Hilton combined for 16 saves in the Mariners' goal, while Farmington keeper Beth Lebel (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) did not record a save on the afternoon. 

The Beavers will return home to Prescott Field for their next contest, the first of six straight home games for UMaine-Farmington, on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 4:00 p.m. against Colby College.
