Peake charts a hat trick to lead UMF past NEC

Box Score

FARMINGTON, Maine – University of Maine at Farmington senior Alida Peake (Penobscot, Maine/George Stevens Academy) navigated a steady rain and poor footing to score three goals in the opening 15 minutes of play, a blow from which visiting New England College never recovered as the Beavers breezed past NEC, 5-0, in a North Atlantic Conference women's soccer clash Sunday afternoon at Prescott Field.

UMaine-Farmington remained unbeaten in NAC play at 3-0-1, while improving to 6-3-1 overall. New England College fell to 4-7-1 overall, 1-3-0 in the NAC.

Peake scored her first goal in the ninth minute, getting behind the NEC defense and finishing a pass from Kayla Tuttle (Waterville, Maine/Waterville). Peake notched her second of the day just 51 seconds later, converting a penalty kick following a foul call on the Pilgrims inside the box.

Tuttle also served up the ball on Peake's final goal of the day in the 15th minute, giving the UMF forward the natural hat trick. Tuttle added a goal to her two assists in the 20th minute, redirecting a shot by Rachel Clement (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) from approximately 20 yards out.

Reserve forward Shelby Bryant (South Portland, Maine/Catherine McAuley) tacked on UMaine-Farmington's final goal in the 72nd minute.

Altogether, UMaine-Farmington outshot New England College, 23-5, with 14 of the Beavers' 23 shots finding their way on goal. UMF's backline allowed just one shot on keeper Beth Lebel (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) all day long, with Lebel making the save to record her third straight game without a goal allowed.

"We had another great defensive effort today in preserving a shutout," said UMF head women's soccer coach Molly Wilkie. "Offensively, Alida and Kayla really asserted our attacking presence and allowed us to get on the board early,  which gave us a lot of confidence."

New England College starting keeper Tricia Sardagnola recorded nine saves over her 75 minutes in the Pilgrims' goal. Heather McFarlane came on for the final 15 minutes, but did not face any shots on goal from the Beavers.

UMaine-Farmington will face Bowdoin College in a non-conference tilt on Wednesday, Oct. 3, down in Brunswick, Maine, starting at 3:30 p.m.
