Box Score STANDISH, Maine – A 14-3 run by St. Joseph's College lasting nearly nine minutes in the middle of the second half proved to be a back-breaker for visiting University of Maine at Farmington, leading the Monks to a 63-55 come-from-behind win over the Beavers, in men's basketball action Wednesday night at the Harold Alfond Center.
The win snapped UMaine-Farmington's eight-game winning streak, dropping the Beavers to 15-4 overall on the season. St. Joseph's improved to 13-7 overall.
UMaine-Farmington (15-4) led by eight, 42-34, with just under 15 minutes remaining in the game when St. Joseph's opened its run. Matthew Medeiros nailed a 3-pointer and James Philbrook eventually followed up with a layup for the Monks, before UMF's Yusuf Iman (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) interrupted the run with a trey of his own.
Zach Blodgett hit jumpers on back-to-back trips down the court, leading the Monks to nine straight points before the Beavers would respond. A Nate Carson (Orrington, Maine/Brewer) bucket pulled UMaine-Farmington to within one of St. Joe's with 5:51 showing, but seven more unanswered points by the Monks left the Beavers trailing 55-47 with just 3:47 to play.
A traditional three-point play by Ben Johnson (Manchester, Maine/Maranacook) pulled UMF to within five of St. Joseph's, but that would be as close as the Beavers would get. UMaine-Farmington was 1-of-6 from the floor over the final two minutes as St. Joseph's hung on for the win.
Medeiros finished with a game-high 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting with four 3-pointers to lead St. Joseph's to the win. Steve Simonds added 15 points, while Blodgett chipped in with 11 off the bench. The Monks took advantage of 17 UMaine-Farmington turnovers to produce 21 points to aid the cause.
UMaine-Farmington's Johnson and Iman each tallied 13 points, while Andrew Dickey (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) charted 10 points. Johnson completed the game's only double-double with 10 rebounds, leading a UMF squad that outworked St. Joe's on the glass, 32-26.
UMaine-Farmington is on the road for its next two games, starting with a North Atlantic Conference matchup at Colby-Sawyer College on Friday, Feb. 1.
