UMaine-Machias stops UMF women's soccer, 2-1

Box Score

FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Machias came from behind to post a 2-1 win over the University of Maine at Farmington, in a non-conference women's soccer matchup Sunday afternoon at Prescott Field.

UMaine-Machias improved to 11-3-0 overall with the win, while UMaine-Farmington fell to 5-6-2 with the loss.

Sarah Pokorny gave the Beavers an early lead, when she beat Clipper keeper Jessica Bickford with an easy tap-in from the right side in the second minute of play, after an initial shot by senior Renee Dupre was blocked by Bickford.

Machias almost got the equalizer in the 14th minute when a shot by Cayla Thomas hit the cross bar. The Clippers succeeded in getting on the board in the 28th minute, when Emma LeGallais put a shot in the lower right corner on a through ball from Kylynn Adams, tying the game at 1-1.

The Clippers scored what proved to be the game winner in the 48th minute. LeGallais began the play with a hard shot from the left side, which was stopped by UMaine-Farmington keeper Amy Jones. A clearing attempt by a UMF defender went straight to Clayre Saunders, who put a shot into the upper half of the goal. Jones got her fingers on the ball, but it was not enough to tip the ball over the crossbar and instead it fell into the Farmington goal to give the Clippers a 2-1 lead.

The Beavers got three shots on goal to Machias' one over the next fourty minutes of play, but Bickford stopped all three attempts to preserve the Clippers' win.

UMaine-Farmington outshot Machias, 16-9, and had a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. Bickford finished with eight saves for the Clippers over 90 minutes in goal; starter Beth Lebel and Jones each played a half in goal for the Beavers, and each charted two saves.

UMaine-Farmington returns to North Atlantic Conference play on Tuesday, Oct. 15, when it hosts Maine Maritime Academy at 3:30 p.m. at Prescott Field.
