Field hockey falls to fourth-ranked Bowdoin, 7-0

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team ran into a buzzsaw in the form of No. 4-ranked Bowdoin College, dropping a 7-0 decision to the Polar Bears on Thursday night.

The win was the fourth straight for the Polar Bears (6-1), who have outscored their opponents 28-3 during the four game win streak. The Beavers fall to 3-4 on the season as Bowdoin extends its career record against Farmington to 37-4-0.

Bowdoin tallied its first goal of the evening off a well-executed penalty corner with under five minutes off the clock.  Katie Riley inserted the ball to Olivia King at the top of the circle where she was able to stick-stop the ball, allowing Colleen Finnerty to step up and drive in Bowdoin's first goal. The second Polar Bear goal came as Farmington goalie Curran Brierley left a loose rebound out in front of the right post, which Emily Simonton was able to step into for Bowdoin's second goal of the game. The Polar Bears' third goal came off the stick of Molly Paduda with 9:18 remaining in the half with a feed from Katie Riley.

The Polar Bears' offensive pressure did not let up as play resumed in the second half.  Rachel Kennedy wasted no time in extending the Bowdoin lead to 4-0 following a scramble in front of the net. Riley tallied her second assist of the night as she crossed the ball to Simonton on the stroke line who was able to get a touch and redirect past Brierley's left leg. Bowdoin continued to capitalize on strong corner play, netting its sixth goal of the game off stick-stop and straight drive that connected with the backboard. This time it was Kelsey Mullaney with the drive off another King stop and Pam Herter insert. Bowdoin's last goal of the game came as Mettler Growney stepped up on a Farmington free hit and carried the ball down the right side. With Liz Znamierowski pressuring on the post, Bowdoin was able to finish up with a 7-0 margin.

Brierley played all 70 minutes in net for the Beavers and stopped 17 Bowdoin shots. Hannah Gartner (59:24) and Clara Belitz (10:36) each had time in net for the Polar Bears, but Farmington was unable to muster a shot. Bowdoin held a 31-0 shot advantage and 23-3 edge in corners.

Farmington hosts Simmons on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM, while the Polar Bears travel to Trinity for an 11:00 AM game on the October 5.
