Box Score FARMINGTON, Maine – Colby College men's soccer added four goals in the span of 20 minutes early in the second half to break open a tight game and post a 5-0 non-conference win over the University of Maine at Farmington, Wednesday evening at Prescott Field.
The Mules improved to 4-5-0 overall with the win, while UMaine-Farmington fell to 2-7-1.
Colby controlled play in the midfield through much of the first half, limiting Farmington to a handful of scoring opportunities but unable to capitalize on their own chances. The Mules' only score of the first half was an own goal in the 39th minute, after a UMF defender kicked the ball away from Tim Stanton's dribble through the 18-yard box and into the back of the Beavers' goal.
A second own goal by UMF gave Colby a 2-0 advantage in the 48th minute. Keith Chernin's shot from the left side of the 18 was headed wide of the goal, but a defensive clearing attempt inadvertently put the ball behind Farmington keeper Ronie Morales and into the goal.
Colby scored its first goal of the game in the 51st minute, when Charlie Dupee took advantage of a UMaine-Farmington turnover in the midfield area and dribbled the ball into the 18 where he beat Morales with a low shot into the left side of the goal.
Chernin scored in the 64th minutes with a blast from the top of the 18 that just made it under the crossbar. Jonathan Sommer capped Colby's scoring with a header from the edge of the six-yard box that found the back of the goal in the 68th minute, off a direct kick by Dan Vogel.
The Mules outshot the Beavers 29-4, and had four corner kicks to Farmington's one. Morales tallied 12 saves in his 90 minutes in the UMF goal, while Colby keeper Peter Quayle logged one save in the shutout win.
UMaine-Farmington returns to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 12, when it travels down to Lewiston, Maine, to face Bates College. Colby is at home on Saturday when it returns to NESCAC play against Amherst College.
