MIT's 14-goal first half trumps UMF women's lacrosse

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- MIT rattled off 11 unanswered goals in the first half en route to a 20-4 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington women's lacrosse team, Saturday afternoon at Jack Barry Field.

Freshman Isabella DiDio produced a game-high seven points on five goals and two assists for the Engineers (2-2) while UMF freshman Ayla Allen (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) led the Beavers (1-1) with two goals and an assist.

MIT senior Laura Wacker opened the game with back-to-back goals while a solo effort by freshman Kira Schott gave MIT a 3-0 lead after 5:14 elapsed. Allen put UMaine-Farmington on the board courtesy of a free-position shot but the Engineers responded with their game-changing run that resulted in a 14-1 advantage with 2:42 left in the half. Schott tallied one goal and three assists while DiDio and Wacker both recorded three goals. Sophomore Maddi Kadnar (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) ended the Beavers' scoring drought on an unassisted marker with 52 seconds on the clock.

MIT produced two quick goals to start the second stanza as DiDio found freshman Nadia Wallace for the first strike and then converted a feed from senior Meghan Wright. UMaine-Farmington countered with Kadnar finding the back of the net at the 24:46 mark to make the score 16-3; however, the Engineers controlled the ball for the majority of the half which led to four goals during the next 20 minutes. Allen provided the final tally of the day with 3:21 left to play.

Wacker finished with six goals for MIT while Schott posted two goals, three assists, and three groundballs. Wright notched seven draw controls to go along with a goal and an assist as Wallace recorded a hat trick. Sophomore Emma Kane tacked on a goal and an assist while DiDio added four draw controls. Sophomore Lyndsy Muri and junior Erica Du both scored a goal as Muri picked up three draw controls. MIT goalies Paige Kennedy and Candice Kaplan shared time in the Engineers' net; Kennedy totaled six saves in 46 minutes as Kaplan closed out the game with one stop.

In addition to her team-leading scoring performance, Allen posted four groundballs and two draw controls. Sophomore Chelsea Morley (York, Maine/York) also had four groundballs for the Beavers while senior Emma Daniel (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) generated two groundballs and two caused turnovers. Freshman Mara Balboni (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) and senior Nateasha Ouellette (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) both collected two draw controls. Junior Hannah Goodenow (Freeport, Maine/Freeport) came up with two saves in the first half while junior Beth Lebel (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) earned a save in the second frame.
