Big halftime lead fuels Colby-Sawyer win over UMF

ANDOVER, N.H. -- The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team opened North Atlantic Conference play with a 13-8 win over the University of Maine at Farmington, Saturday at Proctor Academy.

The Chargers (3-6, 1-0 NAC) and Beavers (2-5, 0-1 NAC) played 11 scoreless minutes in the first half before Colby-Sawyer jumped out to a three-goal lead. Sophomore Carly Baker broke the scoreless tie at the 18:29 mark on a pass from freshman Maryalice Gurnee. Freshman Caitlyn Whearty extended the Charger lead with an unassisted goal a minute later and sophomore Nicole Danehy netted Colby-Sawyer's third goal from 15 feet out on a feed from senior Laurel Bauer.

Farmington found the scoreboard as Molly Carbin (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) used a Lyndsey Grundy (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) pass to beat the Chargers' goaltender and cut the lead to 3-1.

Baker and Danehy would respond by each adding their second goals of the game pushing the Colby-Sawyer lead to 5-1.

After a Mara Balboni (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) gave the Beavers their second goal, the Chargers scored four goals in the final two minutes of the first half. Junior Adrienne Bender netted her second goal on the season on a feed from Whearty at the two-minute mark. A minute later Whearty would score her second goal of the day on a pass from Baker. Senior Ashley Reis took advantage of a free-position attempt with 00:27 reaming to net her first goal of the game and freshman Sara Berry utilized a quick draw control by Reis to score with :16 remaining and giving the Chargers a 9-2 lead at the half.

The Beavers began the second half by controlling the game in the Chargers' zone. Freshman Ayla Allen (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) sparked Farmington as she scored an unassisted goal and thirty seconds later fed Miranda Levesque (Sanford, Maine/Sanford) to cut the lead to 9-4.

Whearty added her third goal of the game and Sara Berry found the net for the second time to push the lead back to seven.

Twelve minutes would pass before Farmington added their fifth goal of the match as Maddi Kadnar (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonskee) used her speed to net a fast break goal.

Adrienne Bender netted her second goal of the game on a pass from Reis to give the Chargers a 12-5 lead with 7:26 remaining.

The Beavers would net three goals in the next two minutes to cut the lead to 12-8. Carlin, Balboni and Kadnar each adding their second goals of the game

The Chargers would put the game out of reach with three minutes to play as Sara Berry utilized a free-position attempt to score her third goal of the game and give Colby-Sawyer a 13-8 lead. The Chargers would play keep away for the remaining three minutes for the 13-8 win.

Colby-Sawyer's offense saw three goals each from Whearty and Berry. Whearty also added two assists and a team high four draw controls.

Farmington's offense was lead by Kadnar, Balboni and Carbin who each netted a pair of goals. Carbin had a match high five draw controls and Balboni had a team high four groundballs.

Charger goalie Jodi Dumayne saved eight shots in the win while her counterpart Hannah Goodenow (Freeport, Maine/Freeport) stopped six shots in the loss.

The Chargers return to Proctor Academy Sunday to face Thomas College for a noon tilt. The Beavers will travel to Castleton State College Sunday for a noon start.
