Box Score STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College men's soccer scored three goals in the first half and visiting University of Maine at Farmington was unable to answer, as the Monks downed the Beavers, 3-0, in a non-conference tilt Wednesday afternoon.
Saint Joseph's (6-2-1) outshot UMaine-Farmington (1-3-1) by a 16 to 5 count, including a 7-2 margin in shots on goal.
The Monks first goal came on a penalty kick in the second minute of play, when Kyle Shangraw scored with a kick that narrowly made it past Farmington keeper Derek Reilly.
Shangraw also scored Saint Joseph's second goal, again on a penalty kick awarded for a foul in the box. Shangraw beat Reilly to the right side of the goal for a 2-0 Monks lead.
The Monks capped their scoring in the 36th minute, when Joe Murphy headed a ball into the top left corner off a free kick from in front of the Saint Joseph's bench.
Reilly finished the game with three saves in the UMF goal, while Monk keeper Robert Petrosillo charted a pair of saves. Each team received a pair of corner kick opportunities, while the Monks were whistled offsides twice.
UMaine-Farmington will close out the month of September on Sunday, Sept. 29, when it hosts Bowdoin College at 2:30 p.m. at Prescott Field. Following the non-conference clash with the Polar Bears, UMF will play four of their next five contests on the road.
