Box Score FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey notched five goals in the first half and then survived a second-half scare from Colby-Sawyer College, posting a 5-3 win North Atlantic Conference win over the Chargers on Saturday afternoon at Prescott Field.
Senior Kaitlyn Bullen opened the scoring for UMaine-Farmington (3-2, 2-0 NAC) just under eight minutes into the game, scoring from right in front of the Colby-Sawyer goal off a pass from Kashley Weymouth. Weymouth took care of the scoring honors herself with 19:28 remaining in the opening frame, this time taking a feed from Chelsea Morley.
Rebecca Young scored on an unassisted breakaway goal with 13:02 showing in the first half, putting the Beavers up 3-0 over the Chargers.
Weymouth and Bullen each notched their second goals of the game late in the first half. Weymouth tallied hers with 8:01 remaining, while Bullen capped the scoring for the frame with goal with 1:50 to play. Freshman Emily Lewia was credited with the assist on Bullen's goal, which put UMaine-Farmington up 5-0 heading into the break.
After failing to record a shot on goal in the first half, Colby-Sawyer (4-5, 0-2 NAC) regrouped during the intermission. The Chargers came out and scored three goals on its first three shots of the second half.
The Chargers' Jess Buckley broke UMF's shutout bid just over two minutes into the half with an unassisted goal. Brittany Grandbois doubled up the score for Colby-Sawyer with 30:18 remaining with an assist by Erika Leach.
A penalty corner, one of only two in the game for the Chargers, produced Colby-Sawyer's third goal when Nichole Danehy found the back of the cage with 27:58 left in the game. Rebecca Perley was credited with the assist.
Colby-Sawyer managed just one shot on goal over the remainder of the game, allowing UMaine-Farmington to hang on for the victory.
UMF starter Curran Brierley logged one save over nearly 63 minutes played in the cage to earn the win. Colby-Sawyer's Jodi Dumayne allowed all five UMF first half goals while making four stops, and was lifted at the break. Charger backup Kasey Redmond also made four saves, and did not allow a goal.
UMaine-Farmington outshot Colby-Sawyer 15-4, and charted an 11-2 advantage in penalty corners.
UMaine-Farmington hosts Castleton State College in a matchup of two NAC undefeateds on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 12:00 p.m. on Prescott Field. Colby-Sawyer heads down the road to Waterville, Maine, for a Sunday clash with Thomas College, also at noon.
