Box Score BOSTON, MA. – The UMaine-Farmington women's soccer team found themselves on the losing end of a 6-0 loss at Wentworth Sunday afternoon, but the final score did not mean the Beavers were completely out of the game.
Wentworth did not waste any time getting shot off to begin the game. The Leopards fired five of the teams 30 shots towards UMF goalie Sam Hatch in the first nine minutes of the game before Keli McLellan got the ball rolling for the Beavers' offense.
Valery Zapata nearly outshot the Beavers by herself, 6-9, and scored three goals in the game. She scored her first goal and second goal of the season in the 33rd minute. Zapata received a long pass from Tori Armishaw in the box, and Zapata's shot was too much for Sam Hatch to handle as it slipped through her hands and found the back of the net.
The game stayed 1-0 until fifteen minutes into the second half when Michelle Murphy scored her second goal of the season. Murphy took a pass from Jackie McCullough and shot from the right side and shot from 30 yards out and found the upper right side the goal to give the Leopards the 2-0 advantage.
Six minutes later, Armishaw added to the lead to give Wentworth a 3-0 lead. She scored her third goal of the season after McCullough dished a pass her way, and took a shot from the right side and scored in the upper left corner of the goal.
Zapata increased the margin again in the 72nd minute off a rebound of her own rebound. UMF relief goalie Haley Murano managed to stop the initial shot, but Zapata got her own rebound and sent it home for her third goal of the season. Zapata added two more goals for the hat trick in the 79th minute and 89th minute.
Beaver goalie Sam Hatch recorded eight saves, but falls to 1-3 on the season. Haley Murano recorded five saves in her relief appearance.
UMaine-Farmington (1-3-0) gets a week to regroup before traveling to Bowdoin next Sunday, September 21st for a 2:00pm start.
