GORHAM, Maine – Aaron Rivard (Acton, Maine/Sanford) and Eric Aguiar (Thornton, N.H./Plymouth Regional) paced the University of Maine at Farmington golf team in with combined 78 at the Southern Maine Cup, hosted at the Gorham Country Club. The tournament format featured the first six holes of better ball, six holes of scramble, and six holes of alternate shot.
The Rivard and Aguiar duo ended the round with a ninth place tie. The pair shot a 36 on the first nine holes and only trailed Saint Joseph's Cam Letourneau and Michael Caron by three strokes for the lead. In the final nine holes, the UMF competitors closed out the day with a 42.
The two other UMF pairings closed out the round with an 81 apiece. Gavin Brickley (Plymouth, N.H./Plymouth Regional) and Travis Kupec (Winsor Locks, Conn./Windsor Locks) carded a 40 on the front nine and 41 on the back nine. Michael Richard (Turner Maine/St. Dominic) and Trevor Hisler (Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan) were nearly identical with Brickley and Kupec, but shot a 41 on the first nine holes and then a 40 on the final nine holes.
UMF placed fourth in the team standings with a combined score of 240. The top three teams were only separated by six strokes with Saint Joseph's College claiming the title with a 219. The University of New England placed second with a 221 and the University of Southern Maine trailed with a 225 for third place.
UMaine-Farmington tees off next Friday at the North Atlantic Conference Championship. The two-day tournament will be hosted at the Rutland Country Club in Rutland, Vt.
