Box Score SALEM, Mass. -- A late run by Salem State gave the University of Maine at Farmington women's lacrosse team (0-1) a hard fought, 10-8, loss in the season opener on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Farmington wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as the Beavers opened up the contest with four unanswered goals in the first eight minutes of regulation. During that stretch, Mara Balboni (Oakland, Maine), Ayla Allen (Rumford, Maine), Maddi Kadnar (Belgrade, Maine), and Carly Raymond (Topsham, Maine) all tallied a goal apiece and held the Vikings scoreless for the first 26 minutes of the game.
Erin Riley ended Salem State's scoring drought at the 5:22 mark that led to a 3-0 run by the Vikings before the end of the half. At the break, Salem had closed the gap to 4-3.
Rhi Jackson (Saco, ME) extended the Beavers lead to 5-3 going coast to coast to beat Vikings' netminder Chyenne Jackson low and inside. Moments later, Allen added to Farmington's lead that put the Beavers up 6-3. Rachel Clasby cut the deficit to 6-4 with the goal coming off an Elizabeth Kozak pass. Allen added another goal at the 23-minute mark to put Farmington atop 7-4, but that lead was erased by a Salem State comeback.
The Vikings reeled off six unanswered goals in a twelve-minute span to take a 10-8 advantage. The run was sparked by Riley and Kozak, who added two goals each, while Courtney Smith and Kristen Caso added one goal apiece.
Allen netted her fourth goal of the afternoon with five and a half minutes remaining but the Beavers could not draw any closer.
Kayla Burgess (Springvale, Maine) made seven stops on the day in her rookie debut. The Beavers fired 27 shots on goals and Chyenne Jackson saved 19 of those for Salem State to pick up the victory.
UMaine-Farmington will travel to Castleton State College to take on the Spartans on March 21st at 1:00 p.m.
