Field hockey stops Colby-Sawyer in 2-0 shutout

Box Score

NEW LONDON, New Hampshire – A shutout performance from goalie Alicia Bridges in her first career start and a solid all-around defensive effort helped fuel the University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team to a 2-0 non-conference victory over Colby-Sawyer College, Monday afternoon at Sally Shaw Veitch Field.

The Beavers evened their season record to 5-5 overall with the victory, after holding a prolific Colby-Sawyer squad in check for most of the afternoon. The Chargers (10-3), who came into Monday's game ranked 11th among Division III leaders in team goals per game with 4.08, had been averaging 12.6 shots on goal per game but were held to just nine by the UMaine-Farmington defense.

Bridges recorded six saves on the afternoon, with senior back Lydia Wasina charting two defensive saves and junior midfielder Abby Pomerleau making one defensive save.

Offensively, neither team was able to gain the upper hand on the scoreboard in the first quarter, with shots even at 4-4 in the opening period despite the Chargers taking five penalty corners.

Senior Alex Bessey put the Beavers up 1-0 at the 11:29 mark of the second quarter with an unassisted goal, her 10th goal of the season.

UMaine-Farmington's one-goal lead held through the remainder of the second quarter and well into the third, with junior Mya Daniels extending the Beavers' advantage with less than two minutes remaining in the frame off an assist from Gracie Foss.

The Beavers statistically dominated the fourth quarter, outshooting the Chargers, 7-2, with a 6-1 advantage in penalty corners, but were unable to add to their lead.

UMaine-Farmington outshot Colby-Sawyer, 18-14, over the entire 60 minutes, and the two teams each had 10 penalty corners. Chargers goalie Lauren Wilkinson tallied 10 saves in the Colby-Sawyer goal.

The Beavers are back on the field this Thursday, Oct. 14, when they head to Gorham, Maine, to face the University of Southern Maine. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
