Box Score FARMINGTON, Maine – A University of Maine at Farmington corner kick turned into an own goal by a Maine Maritime Academy defender, allowing the Beavers to post a 2-1 overtime victory over the Mariners in Saturday's North Atlantic Conference men's soccer match at Leib Field.
Eric McCallum's corner kick in the 92nd minute was headed into the Mariner goal by a Maine Maritime defender who was attempting to play the ball away, allowing the Beavers to complete the come-from-behind win.
The victory ended the Beavers' winless streak against Maine Maritime Academy dating back to September 6, 2009, when UMaine-Farmington downed Maine Maritime, 3-2. Since then, the Beavers had lost or tied 13 straight games versus their in-state rivals from Castine.
Maine Maritime got on the scoreboard in the game's eighth minute when a Mariner throw-in was headed through the box by Evan Allen, and directly to Pieter Oudejans who headed into the UMaine-Farmington goal.
UMaine-Farmington answered in the 40th minute with a penalty kick goal. First year Gracien Mukwa was tripped up in the box with possession of the ball just as he was about to get separation from a pair of Mariner defenders, and was awarded the penalty kick. Mukwa sent his shot into the right side of the Maine Maritime goal while Mariner keeper Matthew Castella went to the left, allowing the Beavers to tie the affair at 1-1.
The second half saw both teams struggle to generate quality scoring opportunities, with a total of seven shots taken between the two teams over the final 45 minutes of regulation. Castella recorded one stop by UMaine-Farmington keeper Jonah Sautter was not challenged in the second half, sending the contest into OT.
UMaine-Farmington finished the game with a 16-4 advantage in total shots and a 10-4 edge in corner kicks. Sautter charted one save over nearly 92 minutes of play, while Castella logged four stops.
The Beavers improved to 8-2-1 with the victory, 5-2-1 in NAC contests. UMaine-Farmington returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 19, when it travels down to Lewiston, Maine, to face Bates College in an 8:00 p.m. contest under the lights.
