Field hockey tripped up by Husson in conference clash

Box Score

FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team struggled to get anything going in its matchup against Husson University on Tuesday afternoon, falling behind early and suffering a 2-0 defeat on Prescott Field.

The Beavers (6-7, 3-3 NECC) were forced to go on the defensive right away, giving up a first quarter goal at the 7:14 mark. Husson (5-5, 4-1 NECC) senior Victoria Friend found the back of the cage after a penalty corner, with an assist by Katie Perkins. Friend struck again in the second period on another corner for the Eagles. After a scramble in front of the Beavers cage, Friend gained control and fired it past UMF goalie Alicia Bridges for a 2-0 lead.

The Beavers showed signs of life in the second half, controlling play for much of the half. UMF's best chance to break into the scoring column came five minutes into the third period when senior Alex Bessey and Jade Petrie fired shots on goal. Husson junior goalie Kimmie Goddard was able to turn both shots away to secure the shutout.

UMF held a 5-3 advantage in shots and 9-5 edge in penalty corners. Goddard made three saves on her way to being credited with the win; Bridges didn't record a save in the loss.

UMaine-Farmington's next opportunity to get back in the win column will come on the road as it travels to Henniker, New Hampshire, to take on New England College on Saturday, October 23, with first pass set for 1:00 pm.
