Box Score WATERVILLE, Maine – A pair of late goals from Thomas College carried the Terriers past the University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team, 3-2, in a New England Collegiate Conference clash on Saturday at Bernatchez Field.
UMaine-Farmington (3-5, 1-3 NECC) took the lead with goals midway through the second quarter and late in the third.
Abby Pomerleau's score off an assist from Alex Bessey with 6:35 remaining in the second stanza knotted the game at 1-1, after Thomas got on the scoreboard barely four minutes earlier on a strike by the Terriers' Britney Gregoire. The Beavers fought off a late flurry of penalty corners and shots from the Terriers, and the game remained tied heading into the halftime intermission.
Senior Gracie Foss vaulted the Beavers into a 2-1 lead with 3:36 to play in the third quarter with an unassisted goal that capped a sequence that began with a penalty corner from Bessey.
UMaine-Farmington's lead was short-lived, however, as the Terriers' Kayci Faulkingham scored just 17 seconds later to tie the game at 2-2.
The Terriers avoided overtime with Grace Slenker's unassisted game-winning goal with 2:17 remaining on the game clock.
Thomas outshot UMaine-Farmington, 22-16, and the Terriers had a 14-5 advantage in penalty corners. Katelyn Rouleau charted seven saves in the Beavers' cage, while Brennan Pinto logged eight saves for the Terriers.
UMaine-Farmington field hockey is home next Saturday, Oct. 9, when it hosts New England College at Prescott Field. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
