Box Score FARMINGTON, Maine – Senior Alex Bessey's penalty stroke with 6:56 remaining in the first overtime period carried the University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over conference rival New England College, on a Senior Day afternoon at Prescott Field.
The win improved UMaine-Farmington's record to 4-5 overall, and 2-2 in New England Collegiate Conference play at the midway point in the league slate.
The Beavers yielded an early goal to the Pilgrims on Drea Chin's score with 10:48 remaining in the first quarter, but UMaine-Farmington knotted the contest with goals in the second and third quarters.
Bessey knotted the game at 1-1 with her first strike of the day, finishing a penalty corner attempt with 7:48 left in the frame off an pass from Abby Pomerleau. Bessey initiated the sequence with the insertion to Ginny Twitchell, who slid the ball over to Pomerleau who passed the ball forward back to Bessey.
Twitchell gave UMaine-Farmington a 2-1 lead at the 3:36 mark of the third quarter, and the Beavers held off New England College's counterattacks until well into the fourth quarter. UMF was poised to claim the victory in regulation, when the Pilgrims' Kacie Weston scored with 10:17 showing on the game clock off a pass from Meaghan McCamish to knot the game at 2-2.
Neither team was able to find the go-ahead goal over the remainder of regulation, sending the game into overtime.
Grace DiMarco registered the victory in the UMaine-Farmington goal after charting five saves on the day. Kayla Doan was credited with four saves in the New England College goal. The Pilgrims finished the game with a 13-12 advantage in total shots, with the Beavers recording nine penalty corners to the Pilgrims' seven.
UMaine-Farmington field hockey returns to action on Monday, Oct. 11, when it faces Colby-Sawyer College in a non-conference road matchup. Game time in New London, New Hampshire, is slated for 3:30 p.m.
