Box Score STANDISH, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team's rally effort was covered goal-for-goal by the home squad from Saint Joseph's College of Maine, lifting the Monks past the Beavers, 4-2, on Wednesday afternoon at the SJC Athletics Complex.
Saint Joseph's scored twice in the opening quarter, including Olivia Esposito's goal in the first minute of play to put the Monks in front, 1-0. Emma Rutledge extended the Monks' lead to 2-0 when she struck with 69 seconds remaining in the opening period.
UMaine-Farmington's Chloe Horn quickly pulled the Beavers back to within one goal of the Monks, 2-1, with an unassisted score with 44 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.
The Monks answered at the 13:21 mark of the second quarter on a goal by Aimee Adams, stretching their lead over the Beavers to 3-1. UMaine-Farmington was unable to get a shot away against Saint Joseph's over the remainder of the period, and the Monks held their 3-1 lead into the halftime break.
Abby Pomerleau again got UMaine-Farmington to within one of Saint Joseph's at the 12:36 mark of the third quarter, with her unassisted goal on the Beavers' only shot of the period. The one-goal margin lasted until late in the third quarter when Esposito's second score of the game put the Monks into a 4-2 lead.
UMaine-Farmington kept Saint Joseph's in check offensively in the fourth quarter, holding the Monks to just two total shots. However the Beavers were unable to put any additional goals on the scoreboard in the final stanza, and saw their comeback effort fall short of the mark.
Saint Joseph's outshot UMaine-Farmington, 16-4, with Katelyn Rouleau and Grace DiMarco sharing duties in the UMF cage and charting a combined seven saves.
UMaine-Farmington returns to New England Collegiate Conference play this Saturday, Sept. 25, when it hosts Manhattanville College at Prescott Field. Game time is slated for 12:00 p.m.
