Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Massachusetts – The University of Maine at Farmington netted two goals in the waning minutes and rallied for a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Smith College, in Sunday's championship of Smith's Caryl Newhof Classic tournament.
The win lifted the Beavers to a 2-0 record.
Neither team was able to find the back of the cage over the first two quarters of action, with Smith holding a 10-5 advantage in total shots over the first 30 minutes and preventing UMaine-Farmington from recording any penalty corners.
The Pioneers continued to control play early in the third quarter, and finally broke the scoreless deadlock with 11:39 remaining in the period.
However, UMaine-Farmington controlled the final stanza to clinch the win. Ginny Twitchell knotted the game at 1-1 with 6:45 showing on the game clock, with Abby Pomerleau earning an assist. The lead was short-lived as Smith's Emily Kehoe scored 17 seconds later to put the Pioneers back in front, 2-1.
Alex Bessey beat Smith goalie Channy Cornell for the equalizer with 3:02 remaining, off an assist from Gracie Foss.
Chloe Horn notched the game-winner with 50 seconds remaining in the contest, completing the comeback and lifting the Beavers to the win.
UMaine-Farmington goalie Grace DiMarco charted eight saves versus the Pioneers, while Cornell's registered six stops in the Smith cage. The Pioneers had nine penalty corner opportunities, while UMaine-Farmington had three.
Bessey was named the Tournament MVP after finishing the weekend with five goals, DiMarco and Foss were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
UMaine-Farmington field hockey makes the short trip to Waterville, Maine, on Wednesday, Sept. 8, to face in-state rival Colby College. Game time is slated for 6:00 p.m.
