WATERVILLE, Maine- On Sunday, the University of Maine at Farmington golf team competed in their final tuneup before the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) two-day golf tournament begins on Saturday, October 8th. The Beavers placed seventh on Sunday at the Colby Classic held at the Waterville Country Club.
The tournament was formatted uniquely in which schools created pairs that generated a combined score over the 18 holes. The first six holes of the tournament followed a best ball format where the pairing would each play their own ball for each hole and card the best score. The next six holes followed a scramble format in which the pairing would each play a ball and choose which ball ended in the most useful location and play from that spot. The last six holes were played in an alternating shot format where the pairing would play one ball and alternate who hit after each shot. The top three pairings from each school contributed to the cumulative score. The other schools competing included Colby College, Husson University (two teams), Bates College, Maine Maritime Academy, and Thomas College.
The Beavers three pairings combined to shoot a 243 to finish in seventh place. The Beavers pairing of Neil LaRochelle III (Lisbon Falls, Maine) and Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) paced UMF with a 73. They were trailed by the pairing Jack Burton (Dayton, Maine) and Will Robert (Fairfax Station, Virginia) who tallied a 77. The pairing of Chris Frey (Auburn, Maine) and Sam Parsell (Newington, Conn.) carded a 93.
Thomas finished in first place on the day as their three pairings combined to shoot a 215. Husson University had two pairing card 70s, a tournament low.
