Beavers Break Numerous Records at NCAA Indoor New England Regional Championship

BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Maine at Farmington men's and women's track and field teams competed today at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship at the TRACK at New Balanced in Boston, Massachusetts. Today's event was highly successful as five program records fell.

Women's Highlights

Anna MacDonald (Bangor, Maine), Kennedy Todd (Scarborough, Maine), Carrie Burr (Pittsfield, Maine), and Erica Johnson (Nobleboro, Maine) set the program record in the 4x200 meter relay, finishing with a time of 1:54.09, beating the previous record by over six seconds. The quartet combined to finish in 17th place overall in the event out of 24 competing teams.

MacDonald, Burr, Todd, and Joy Evans (Farmington, Maine) set the program record in the distance medley relay, placing 20th overall against a competitive field. MacDonald ran the 1,200 meter section, Todd the 400 meters, Burr the 800 meters, and Joy Evans finished with the 1,600 meters. The four combined to post a time of 13:24.73 to break the record.

MacDonald, Burr, Todd, and Evans also competed in the 4x400 meter relay. The four placed 21st overall in the event, posting a time of 4:33.09.

Individually, Johnson competed in the 60 meter hurdles where she placed 25th overall with a time of 10.55 seconds.

Men's Highlights

Justin Castaldo (Scarborough, Maine) had a big day on the track for the Beavers. Castaldo set the program record in the 1,000 meters, racing to a time of 2:33.27 and besting the record by nearly two seconds. He placed 9th overall in the event out of 27 competitors.

Castaldo, Ethan Linscott (Lakeville, Maine), Connor McFarland (Damariscotta, Maine), and Connor Freeman (Bath, Maine) combined to set the program record in the distance medley relay, breaking the previous record by more than seven seconds. Linscott ran the 1,200 meter portion, McFarland the 400 meters, Freeman the 800 meters, and Castaldo capping off the relay with the 1,600 meters. The foursome posted a time of 10:39.99 to place 11th overall in the event. 

Senior Alixx Canwell (Chelsea, Maine) continued his record breaking season on Sunday. Canwell placed 6th overall in the weight throw, completing a throw that was marked at 16.64 meters. The 6th place finish is the highest finish at a regional event in Canwell's career and the highest finish by a male athlete in Farmington history.

Canwell also had a strong showing in the shot put, placing 11th overall in the event after his throw was marked at 13.73 meters.

Ben Vachon (Portland, Maine) qualified for the long jump, finishing 17th overall in the event after his third attempt was marked at 6.11 meters. 

The Beavers 4x400 meter relay team of Seamus Reeve (Kittery, Maine), Castaldo, Linscott, and McFarland placed 23rd overall. The four combined for a time of 3:35.39 in the event.

UP NEXT

Today's New England Indoor Championship marked the end of the indoor season for the Beavers. The Beavers return to action outdoors on March 23 at the J. Elmer Swanson Spring Classic hosted by Wesleyan.
