Canwell Qualifies for New England’s in Two Events, Women’s 4x100 Sets School Record at SNHU Invite

eetMANCHESTER, N.H. - The University of Maine at Farmington men's and women's track and field team's opened up their outdoor season in spectacular fashion at the SNHU Invite. On the men's side Alixx Canwell (Chelsea, Maine) picked up right where he left off in indoor, qualifying for the New England Regional Championships in both the hammer throw and the shot put. On the women's side, their day was highlighted by Cara Perry (Stoughton, Mass.), Carrie Burr (Pittsfield, Maine), Kennedy Todd (Scarborough, Maine), and Erica Johnson (Nobleboro, Maine) setting the 4x100 program record.

Men's Highlights

Canwell had a phenomenal first outdoor meet of the season. He set a personal record in the hammer throw, setting the program record and qualifying for the New England Regional championship with a throw of 53.77 meters. He won the event by over 20 feet. In the shot put, Canwell placed 2nd overall, just .02 meters behind Salvatore Lando with a throw of 13.87 meters. Canwell also qualified for the New England Regional Championships in the shot put.

First-year Alex Crews (Winslow, Maine) had himself a day as well. Crews placed 3rd overall in the discus, finishing with a personal record and 2nd overall in program history with a throw of 37.97 meters.

Ethan Linscott (Lakeville, Maine) also had a great day, finishing 8th overall in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:14.09. The time for Linscott is the 3rd best time in program history.

Senior Justin Castaldo (Scarborough, Maine) placed 4th overall in the 5,000 meters with an impressive time of 5:48.17. The time puts him 3rd overall in school history.

The Beavers had the top-three finishers in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Connor Freeman (Bath, Maine) was the first Beaver across the finish line, finishing with a time of 10:17.60, the 2nd fastest time in program history. James Riley (Shrewsbury, Mass.) finished 2nd with a time of 10:24.62, the 4th fastest time in program history. Andrew LaFlamme (Nashua, N.H.) placed 3rd with a time of 10:45.86.

Ben Vachon (Portland, Maine) opened his season with a 1st place finish in the high jump, winning in a jump off and hitting a personal record of 1.80 meters. The jump from Vachon ties him for 2nd in program history. 

First-year Charlie Thompson (Coventry, Vermont) placed 3rd overall in the pole vault, clearing the 3.50 meter mark and putting himself 2nd overall in program history.

Women's Highlights

Perry, Burr, Todd, and Johnson posted a time of 51.79 seconds to break the program record in the 4x100 meter relay.

Perry posted a 7th place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 28.72 seconds. The time for Perry set a personal record and placed her 5th overall in program history.

Burr placed 5th in the 400 meters with a time of 1:05.11. Burr's impressive time puts her 4th overall in program history.

Joy Evans (Farmington, Maine) opened her season in style with a 5th place finish in the 1,500 meters, posting a time of 5:15.02. The time places her 5th overall in UMF history.

Ilana Lybarger (Brussel, Belgium) also had a strong start to her season, placing 6th overall in the hammer throw with a throw marked at 35.05 meters. The throw for Lybarger set a personal record.

Johnson grabbed a top-10 finish, placing 8th in the 200 meter dash, posting a time of 28.88 seconds. She also placed 6th overall in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.62 seconds.

Kaitlyn Harmon-Bolding (Biddeford, Maine) placed 7th overall in the discus with a throw marked at 28.19 meters.

The Beavers return to action next Saturday at the Jim Sheeham Memorial Invitational at Fitchburg State.
