Nine Track and Field Athletes named to College Sports Communicators All-District Team

FARMINGTON, Maine - On Tuesday afternoon, the College Sports Communicators (CSC) announced the recipients of the 2024 Academic All-District honors and nine University of Maine at Farmington track and field members were awarded with the distinction as Carrie Burr (Pittsfield, Maine), Alixx Canwell (Chelsea, Maine), Thomas Gingras (Gardiner, Maine), Emily Hargreaves (New Gloucester, Maine), Joy Evans (Farmington, Maine), Anna MacDonald (Bangor, Maine), Jimmy Reel (Nashua, N.H.), Alex Sheran (Nashua, N.H), and Kennedy Todd (Scarborough, Maine) all received the prestigious recognition.

In order to qualify for the CSC Academic All-District team in track and field, athletes must have placed inside the top-50 of a particular event within their program's region while also possessing a cumulative grade point average of a 3.50 or higher and also be at least a sophomore. 

Burr had a phenomenal year on the track, competing in numerous different events. Needing to place inside the top-50 of just one event to qualify for the CSC Academic All-District team, Burr placed inside the top-50 of six different events. Burr finished 5th overall in the heptathlon, 38th in the 100 meters, 21st in the 100 meter hurdles, 27th in the 400 meter hurdles, 43rd in the high jump, and 31st in the javelin. Burr also received USTFCCCA All-Region honors this season after placing 5th in the heptathlon in the the East Region.

Canwell completed one of the most decorated careers in Farmington track and field history this season and adds yet another accolade to his collection. Canwell placed inside the top-10 of the East Region in a pair of events, and inside the top-25 on another. He placed 5th overall in the hammer throw, 8th overall in the shot put, and 24th overall in the discus. Canwell was named to the USTFCCCA All-Region team after placing 5th overall in the East Region in the hammer throw. 

Gingras was a versatile member of the men's track and field team, competing in several events throughout the 2024 season. Gingras finished the year ranked 17th overall in the decathlon and 46th in pole vault inside the East Region.

Hargreaves was a valuable member of the women's track and field team as a thrower. Hargreaves wrapped up her senior season ranked 20th overall in the hammer throw and 46th overall in the pole vault to receive CSC Academic All-District honors.

Evans enjoyed great success throughout her first season as a collegiate athlete. Evans ranked inside the top-50 of the East Region in both the pole vault and the 10,000 meters. In the 10,000 meters she finished the season ranked 38th while ranking 46th overall in the pole vault. 

MacDonald found herself inside the East Region top-50 in 10,000 meters as well as the 3,000 meter steeplechase. MacDonald placed 47th overall in the 10,000 meters and 23rd in the 3,000 meter steeplechase to be named to the Academic All-District Team.

Reel was forced to miss most of the outdoor season with an injury but still was able to find his way into the top-25 of the decathlon in the East Region. Reel finished the year ranked 21st overall in the decathlon.

Sheran, along with Canwell, was a valuable thrower for the track and field team. Sheran placed inside the top-50 in the hammer throw, shot put, and the discus. Sheran finished the year ranked 35th in discus, 26th in the hammer throw, and 42nd in shot put in the East Region.

Todd competed mostly in sprint events throughout the season but trained and competed for the heptathlon throughout the season as well. Todd placed 21st overall in the heptathlon to be named to the Academic All-District team. 

"The 2023-24 Academic All-District® Cross Country and Track and Field teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the diamond and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes baseball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.

Academic All-District® honorees were considered for advancement to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. Student-athletes selected as CSC Academic All-America® finalists are denoted with an asterisk and will advance to the national ballot to be voted on by CSC members. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced June 18, 2024. Click here to read the full list.

The Division II and III CSC Academic All-America® programs are partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2023-24 Divisions II and III Academic All-America® programs. The NAIA CSC Academic All-America® program is partially financially supported through the NAIA governance structure."
