Day One From NAC Championship

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Track and Field Championship kicked off today in Oneonta, New York. The University of Maine at Farmington men's and women's track and field teams are in good shape after day one.

Men's Highlights

Alixx Canwell (Chelsea, Maine) the reigning NAC Champion in the hammer throw, defended his crown, leaving no doubt, topping the 2nd place finisher by over four and a half meters. Canwell's best attempt was measured at 50.88 meters to claim the crown.

Alex Sheran (Nashua, N.H.) and Alex Crew (Winslow, Maine) each scored for the Beavers in the hammer throw. Sheran placed 4th overall, totaling five points with a throw marked at 40.38 meters. Crew tallied three points with an impressive throw of 36.94 meters.

Nate Trussell (Brewer, Maine) currently is seeded 1st overall in the 110 meter hurdles heading into the finals on Sunday. Trussell finished with a time of 15.62 seconds in the event.

In the pole vault, Charlie Thompson (Coventry, Vermont) and Thomas Gingras (Gardiner, Maine) each scored, finishing 6th and 7th respectively. Thompson cleared the 3.20 meter mark to place 6th and Gingras placed 7th after clearing the 2.75 meter barrier.

The men's decathlon is half way through after day one. Ben Vachon (Portland, Maine) has had a successful start to the event. Vachon placed 1st overall in the 100 meter dash, the long jump, and the high jump. Vachon added a 4th place finish in the shot put and 3rd overall in the 400 meters.

Thompson and Gingras also fared well for themselves in today's decathlon events. Thompson placed 1st in the 400 meters. He also finished 2nd in the shot put, long jump, and the high jump. He also placed 3rd in the 100 meter dash.

Seamus Reeve (Kittery, Maine) is seeded 8th, making it back to the finals in the 100 meter dash. Reeve posted a time of 11.37 seconds in the event.

Women's Highlights

Erica Johnson (Nobleboro, Maine) had a fantastic start to the championship meet. Johnson placed 2nd overall in the triple jump, landing a jump of 10.78 meters. Johnson is also seeded 2nd overall in the 100 meter dash, finishing with a time of 12.64 seconds in the event. Johnson also placed 3rd overall in the pole vault, clearing the 2.15 meter barrier. 

Reigning NAC Champion in the hammer throw, Emily Hargreaves (New Gloucester, Maine) just missed out on defending her crown, placing 2nd overall in the event. Hargreaves' best attempt was measured at 40.69 meters, less than two meters behind Kitty Messina of SUNY Delhi.

Ilana Lybarger (Brussels, Belgium) and Kaitlyn Harmon-Bolding (Biddeford, Maine) placed 5th and 6th respectively in the hammer throw. Lybarger grabbed 5th with a throw of 36.80 meters. Harmon-Bolding's best attempt was measured at 35.63 meters.

Five Beavers placed inside the top-seven of the 10,000 meters. Joy Evans (Farmington, Maine) was crowned the NAC Champion in the event.  Evans posted a time of 43:36.45, 40 seconds quicker than Marissa Lombardi of SUNY Delhi. Abby MacDonald (Bangor, Maine) placed 3rd with a time of 46:59.42. Anna MacDonald (Bangor, Maine) finished with a time of 49:14.55 to grab 4th.. Eve Poteet (Fairhill, Maryland) placed 5th with a time of 49:14.62. Sarah Chapin (Readfield, Maine) was in 7th overall with a time of 52:42.24.

Hannah Milliken (Greene, Maine) added a pair of important 6th place finishes. Milliken crossed the 1.85 meter barrier in the pole vault to grab 6th. Milliken also placed 6th in the javelin, reaching 26.35 meters.

Carrie Burr (Pittsfield, Maine) grabbed 4th place overall in the javelin with her best throw being marked at 30.05 meters. 

Kennedy Todd (Scarborough, Maine) and Lybarger each are competing in the heptathlon and have shown very well for themselves. Lybarger placed 1st in the shot put and Todd was 2nd in the 200 meters.

Day two of the NAC Championship will take place tomorrow.
