Beavers Complete Weekend Sweep at Sugarloaf

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington men's alpine team completed their season opening weekend with a two-day sweep by once again placing first in today's Reynolds Division slalom event at Sugarloaf. One day after sweeping the podium, the Beavers placed two on the podium on Saturday en route to seven place points in their first place effort.

The Beavers left no doubt, placing seven skiers in the top nine.

Beaver Skiers:

Sam Roy (Frenchville, Maine) earned his first gold medal of the season, squeaking out a narrow victory over Jack Price of Saint Joseph's College of Maine. Roy had a two-run combined time of 1:03.72 to beat Price by 0.23 seconds. Roy had a first run time of 31.56 seconds and a second run time of 32.16 in his gold medal effort.

One day after placing second in the giant slalom event, junior Lance Dolan (Coplin Plantation, Maine) earned his second medal of the weekend by taking home bronze on Saturday. Dolan finished with a total time of 1:04.98. His first run came in at 31.54 seconds which was good for second at the time. His second run clocked in at 32.77 seconds.

Junior Sam McKee (Wayne, Maine) placed fourth overall, finishing with a cumulative time of 1:06.84. McKee finished his first run with a time of 32.81 seconds and his second run with a time of 34.03 seconds. The fourth place finish for McKee marks the highest finish in his career. 

Roy, Dolan, and McKee combined for a total time of 3:14.55 to top the field.

Declan Varnerin (Stow, Mass.), Chase Raven (Hudson, Wisc.), Nicholas Quast (Ossington, N.Y.), and Jay Schwartz (Bedford, Mass.) each placed inside the top nine but did not contribute to the team's time.

Varnerin finished his two runs with a combined time of 1:07.37 to finish in fifth place overall. His two runs clocked in at 32.93 seconds and 34.44 seconds respectively.

Raven's combined time of 1:07.66 was good for a sixth place finish. He finished his first run with a time of 33.53 seconds and his second run in 34.13 seconds.

Quast placed seventh in the field with a total time of 1:08.08. His two runs came in at 33.38 seconds and 34.70 seconds.

Schwartz registered a cumulative time of 1:09.15 notching him a ninth place finish. His first run clocked in at 33.67 seconds and his second at 35.48 seconds.

UP NEXT

The Beavers will be back on the hill next Saturday, competing in another Reynolds Division giant slalom event scheduled to take place at Pleasant Mountain in Bridgton, Maine.
