CASTINE -- Chelsea Norton (Westbrook, ME) scored a pair of unassisted goals and Amanda Byrne (Winslow, ME) converted a Melissa St. Amand (Windsor, ME) pass as the University of Maine at Farmington women's soccer team defeated Maine Maritime Academy 3-1 in North Atlantic Conference action Wednesday.
The Beavers ran their record to 7-3 overall and 5-0 in the NAC, while the Mariners slipped to 7-4 (3-3).
UMF got on the scoreboard at the 22:15 mark when Norton collected the rebound after a Lacey Jackson (York, PA) save and tucked it between the keeper and the post for the 1-0 lead. The Beavers struck again in the 32nd minute when Byrne took a pass from St. Amand at the edge of the box and lofted it over the keeper for the score. The Beavers outshot MMA 15-1 as they took a 2-0 lead into the half.
UMF notched its third goal of the game at 48:05 as Norton scored her second unassisted goal to put the Beavers up 3-0.
MMA scored with 23 seconds left in the game when Katie Hutchinson (Dixfield, ME) converted on a breakaway and ended the shutout bid for the Beavers. The Mariners were outshot 24-3 on the game.
Kerry Kowalczyk (Topsham, ME) got the win for UMF, making two saves on two shots. Ashley Holshouser (Berwick, ME) played the last 15:12 in goal for UMF.
Jackson finished with seven saves in the loss.
