CASTLETON, Vt. -- The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team closed out its regular season with a 2-1 North Atlantic Conference loss to Castleton State College today.

Previously unbeaten in the NAC, Farmington fell to 8-7 overall and 5-1 in the NAC, while the Spartans improved to 12-7 (5-1). Both teams will advance to the upcoming NAC Tournament and await final pairings to see where and when they will play.

Castleton received a goal and an assist from Carolyn Griggs en route to the win.

Griggs broke through with her 18th goal of the season 8:48 into the first half. Farmington failed to clear the ball after a save by goalie Kaeleigh Barker (Chichester, NH) and Griggs was able to settle and lift a shot into the far corner of the goal. Just under 11 minutes later, Griggs set up Kayla Blank for what proved to be the game winner. Griggs sent a pass from outside the circle in to Blank who redirected the shot just inside the left post for her 19th goal of the season.

Castleton was able to shut down the Beaver attack in the first half, and did not allow a shot. The second half was a different story as Farmington came out on the attack, firing seven shots in the first 10 minutes of play. The Beavers kept the pressure on and eventually broke through with 14 minutes remaining. Alyssa St. Pierre (Jay, ME) forced a turnover in the scoring area, and lifted her sixth goal of the season into an empty net to cut the lead in half. St. Pierre had an excellent chance to tie the game just 1:30 later but her shot ricocheted off the far post.

Barker ended the game with five saves.

Castleton goalie, Trisha Clark stopped eight shots in the win.
