BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team opened its season by dropping both ends of a twinbill to Massachusetts Maritime Academy today. The Buccaneers claimed the opener 9-4, and then completed the sweep with a 7-3 victory in game two.
Farmington (0-2) was scheduled to take on host Gordon College and play Emerson College in a doubleheader on Saturday, but the games were postponed due to unplayable conditions. The contests will not be made up.
Right-hander Billy Martin (Virginia Beach, VA) picked up his second win of the season in the opener in a complete game seven inning performance. He allowed four runs, only two of which were earned, on six hits, while striking out eight. Farmington's Dan Hemdal (Nashua, NH) was tagged with the loss.
MMA leftfielder Nick Levitre (Grafton, MA) finished the day 2-for-3 with a run scored. Mark Mozelak (New Hartford, CT) and Will Rodriguez (Lowell, MA) each went 2-for-4 for the Bucs. Freshman Ross Hickey (Centerville, MA) ended the day 1-for-1 with two RBI and three runs scored.
Dan Stefanilo (Sanford ME) led the Beavers in game one at the plate finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Southpaw Eric Moreschi (Quincy, MA) went six innings allowing one run on four hits to win the second game. Moreschi (2-0) struckout nine and walked three. Corey Murphy (Wareham, MA) came on in relief and struggle in two-thirds of an inning giving way to Levitre who picked up the final out.
Mozelak gave the Bucs a 4-0 lead in the third inning with a three RBI home run. In the field Mozelak made two stellar plays at shortstop to keep the Beavers off the bases. Anthony Barrett (Bridgewate, MAr) finished the second game 3-for-3 for MMA with an RBI.
Jared Wales (New Gloucester, ME) got the start for UMF and went four frames before giving way to Will Griffiths (Mechanic Falls, ME) who pitched the fifth. Matt Levine (Pelham, NH) pitched the sixth for the Beavers. Wales (0-1) was tagged with the loss.
