LEWISTON -- The Bates College baseball team pounded out a season-high 20 hits and rode a strong pitching performance by freshman Paul Chiampa to a 15-2 non-conference win over UMaine-Farmington on Thursday at Leahey Field.
The Beavers dropped to 3-10 and are scheduled to host the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday in a non-conference doubleheader. The Bobcats improved to 5-14.
Bates broke out of a 0-0 tie through two innings with four runs inthe third, three in the fourth, and four in the fifth for a 10-0 lead through five. The Bobcats tacked on a run in the seventh and three more in the eighth for their biggest offensive output of the year.
Chiampa threw six innings and allowed one unearned runs, on five hits, striking out three for his first college victory (1-1). Ryan Horvath threw two shutout innings of relief before giving way to Noah Burke, who allowed the Beavers one run in the ninth.
Pat Howell (Nobleboro, ME) took the loss for the Beavers, going 4.1 innings and allowing 10 runs (9 earned) on 12 hits and three walks.
Kyle Shea (Bar Harbor, ME) and Andrew Dean (Gorham, ME) had two hits apiece for the Beavers, who collected seven in all.
Bates' Noah Lynd entered the game for Erik Hood in the second inning after Hood aggravated a muscle strain while running the bases. Lynd seized the opportunity by going 3-5 with a pair of doubles and 4 RBIs the rest of the way.
Tom Beaton also hit a pair of doubles while scoring three runs and driving in three more. Senior SS Brian Mahoney was 3-5 and Casey McCormack, Denis Hogan, Beaton, senior Brian Buckley (Andover, Mass.) and first-year 3B Jake Simon (Waterford, Conn.) all collected two hits in the effort.
