LYNDON CENTER, Vt. -- Lyndon State College put up 19 runs and pounded out 28 hits en route to a baseball doubleheader sweep of the University of Maine at Farmington today at Skip Pound Field. The Hornets won the contests by scores of 7-5 and 12-6, respectively.
Farmington (5-18) is scheduled to return to the diamond Sunday when it hosts Lyndon State in a noontime doubleheader.
In the opener, Jason Ryan went 3-for-3 at the plate and Rob Malloy chipped in three hits to lead LSC to a come-from-behind victory. Jordan Royer, Ben Clark and Matt Lapham had two hits each for the winners and Clark had a team-high three runs-batted-in in the contest.
Kyle Shea (Bar Harbor, ME), Andrew Dean (Gorham, ME) and Mike Cummons (Lincolnville, ME) had two hits each for the Beavers.
Matthew Picard, who relieved Lyndon State starter Josh Fletcher in the fifth, fanned three hitters in two and one-third innings of work to get the win. He gave way to reliever Jake Ainsworth in the seventh, which picked up his first save of the season.
Dan Hemdal (Nashua, NH) went 4.2 innings for Farmington and was tagged with the loss.
In the nightcap, LSC plated nine runs in the bottom of the first, on 10 hits, and easily coasted to its 11th win of the season.
Malloy had four hits in the game while Royer, Adrian Guyer and Dana Biondi added two each.
Phineas Peake (Penobscot, ME) hammered out four hits for the Beavers and UMF catcher Tyler Hanson (Sanford, ME) had two.
Picard went five strong innings to earn his second victory of the day. The junior left-hander allowed only one earned run on seven hits while striking out seven.
Losing pitcher Brian Morrison (Saco, ME) didn't make it out of the first inning, allowing nine runs, eight of them earned, on 10 hits in two-thirds of an inning.
