Baseball earns first wins of season

WORCESTER, Mass. -- The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team notched its first wins of the season by taking at North Atlantic Conference doubleheader from Becker College 10-6 and 5-2 at Tivnan Field today.

The Beavers improved to 2-6 overall and 2-2 in the NAC. Farmington is scheduled to host Thomas College on Wednesday at a location to be announced. The Hawks slipped to 2-13 (0-4).

In the first seven-inning game, Tyler Hanson (Sanford, ME) went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, while Brian Morrison (Saco, ME) singled and drove in two runs and Phineas Peake (Penobscot, ME) and Corey Provencher (Rumford, ME) each plated a run. The Beavers scored in each inning, except for the second, and took advantage of 12 free passes by Becker pitchers.

Dan Hemdal (Nashua, NH) hurled six innings for the victory with two walks and three strikeouts. The Hawks rallied with five runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Bill Ridge (South Portland, ME) recorded the final three outs, including a strikeout, to seal the win.

Roger Graham (Dracut, MA) smacked two singles and drove in two runs for Becker.

Kurt Tholen (Goshen, CT) tossed three innings with five walks and three strikeouts in the loss.

In game two, the Beavers scored three times in the eighth inning to snatch the victory after Becker scored a pair of runs in the seventh to tie the contest.

Peake scored when Provencher reached on an error to take a 3-2 edge. Steven Hutchinson (Beverly, MA) plated Provencher on a fielder's choice to push the lead to 4-2 and Hanson came home on a wild pitch for a 5-2 final.

Peake and Russ Schmelzer (Winthrop, ME) each collected a pair of base hits, while Schmelzer swiped three bases.

Craig Pendleton (Saco, ME) scattered six hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts in a complete-game victory.

Dan Briand (Northbridge, MA) smacked a two-run base hit for the Hawks.

Jason Allan (South Berwick, ME) took the loss for Becker with seven-plus innings of work with three walks and two strikeouts.
