FARMINGTON -- The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team finished its season at 5-22 as the Beavers were swept by Bates College 5-3, 19-6 in a doubleheader at Hippach Field today.
Bates improved to 12-20 and is scheduled to host Middlebury College on Friday.
In the opener, the Bobcats used a three-run sixth inning to pull away from the Beavers. The frame was highlighted by a two-run double from Brian Buckley (Andover, MA).
Sean VanderVliet (Meriden, NH) grabbed the win for Bates. The senior scattered eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts in a complete-game effort.
Erik Hood (Berlin, NH) rapped a pair singles for the Bobcats.
Dan Hemdal (Nashua, NH) struck out five and walked two in 5.1 innings of work for Farmington. Kyle Feltis (Bristol, ME) hurled 1.2 innings of one-hit ball in relief.
The Beavers tried to make a game of it in the seventh as a Corey Provencher (Rumford, ME) sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Josh Garneau (South Portland, ME) cut the lead to 5-3, but the Bobcats staved off the rally for the win. Provencher collected a pair of singles and two RBI in the game. Provencher, Feltis and Dan Stefanilo (Sanford, ME) were three seniors playing in their final games for Farmington.
In the second game, the Bobcats pounded out 21 hits in rolling past Farmington.
Gordy Webb (Hampden, ME) led the charge for Bates with two singles, a double, a home run and five RBI with Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, MA) also driving in five runs with two singles and a double. Hood was 3 for 3 with three RBI, while Jake Simon (Waterford, CT) clubbed a two-run home run.
Paul Chiampa (Bryantville, MA) notched the win for Bates with a six-inning performance, including a walk and two strikeouts.
Brian Morrison (Saco, ME) went four innings in the losing effort with a walk and five strikeouts.
Farmington's Mitch Bean (Old Orchard Beach, ME) clubbed his first career collegiate home run -- a three-run blast -- to cap a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Phineas Peake (Penobscot, ME) singled three times for the Beavers, while Tyler Hanson (Sanford, ME) singled twice with two RBI, Provencher doubled and Stefanilo smacked an RBI single.
