WENHAM, Mass. -- The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team fell to Gordon College 2-1 in overtime in non-conference action today.
The Beavers (0-1) are scheduled to return to action on Sunday when they host Bates College at noon.
Veronica Pierce slammed home the gamewinner just 54 seconds into overtime as the Fighting Scots won their third straight game.
After the first half the games was scoreless, Gordon (3-1) had by far the better of the scoring opportunities with eight corners and nine shots in the opening period, but was unable to crack the Beaver defense.
The second half was more of the same. It appeared that the game might head towards overtime scoreless, but with less than ten minutes to play Ariani Niavradki blasted a long shot from the top of the circle. It deflected off the stick of freshman Clara Baker, and the Scots took a 1-0 lead.
However, just a few minutes later, Beaver junior Alyssa St. Pierre (Jay, ME) snuck behind the Gordon defense and knotted the score, sending the game into overtime, setting the stage for Pierce's heroics.
Gordon was aided by a very strong performance from senior goalie Chyanne Wilson who had eight saves.
Kaeleigh Barker (Chichester, NH) stopped eighteen shots for the Beavers.
