Men's basketball falters early, loses at UNE

Box Score

BIDDEFORD -- The University of New England led 49-28 at intermission en route to an 81-67 non-conference men's basketball win over the University of Maine at Farmington this evening.

The Beavers remained winless at 0-6 and are scheduled to return to action on Jan. 7 against Plymouth State University at Dearborn Gym.

Josh Tanguay (Gorham, ME) tallied game highs of 21 points and 11 boards for the Beavers. Tanguay was 9-for-13 from the floor. Kevin Leary (Manchester, ME) and Eric Taylor (Oakland, Maine) chipped in 11 points apiece. Taylor snagged nine caroms to help Farmington to a 36-28 cushion on the glass.

Victor Oruonyehu (Austin, TX) scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half. The victory, which snapped a five-game UNE (3-6) losing skid, was the Nor'easters' 15th consecutive win at the Campus Center.

Quentin Thompson (Austin, TX) scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the way for the Nor'easters. Joining Thompson and Oruonyehu in double figures was sophomore guard Anthony Johnson (Austin, TX) with 12 points, along with senior guard Marchale Robinson (Baton Rouge, LA) who added 11.

After the Nor'easters scored the first five points of the contest, the Beavers responded with a 6-0 run to take a one-point lead. Two free throws by Thompson put UNE back on top, but Tanguay converted down low to give Farmington an 8-7 lead, which would prove to be its final advantage of the contest.

From there, the Big Blue forged a 18-4 run to take a 25-12 lead at the 11:03 mark. Robinson scored eight points during the spurt, including a pair of three-pointers.

The Beavers would score the next three points to get the deficit back to single digits, but the Nor'easters responded with a 16-5 surge to establish a 20-point (41-21) pad with six minutes left in the frame.

The hosts shot 51.6 percent (16 of 31) from the floor over the opening 20 minutes while forcing 16 Farmington turnovers.

The Nor'easters led comfortably the entire second stanza, seeing their lead crest at 26 (78-52) with 3:55 remaining before settling on the final margin of 14.

UNE, which made seven treys in each half, was credited with 11 steals on 27 Beaver turnovers. Farmington shot an even 50 percent (27 of 54) for the contest.
