Box Score BANGOR -- The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team slipped to 0-3 with a 6-1 loss to Bates College in non-conference action today at Husson University. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Bates, but moved to Bangor due to unplayable field conditions.
Josh Garneau (South Portland, ME) slapped a pair of base hits and drove in the lone run for the Beavers, who are scheduled to open North Atlantic Conference play Saturday at Castleton State College. Connor McNeill (Portland, ME) doubled in the loss, while Tyler Hanson (Sanford, ME), Phineas Peake (Penobscot, ME) and Kyle Shea (Bar Harbor, ME) each singled.
Brian Morrison (Saco, ME) took the loss for Farmington with four runs allowed on four hits with two walks and a strikeout in three innings of work. Dan Hemdal (Nashua, NH), Brandon Gallagher (Cumberland, ME) and Craig Pendleton (Saco, ME) each threw in relief. Pendleton (one run, four hits, five strikeouts) tossed three innings, while Hemdal (one hit, one strikeout) and Gallagher (one run, one hit) each worked a frame.
Ben Shwartz pitched into the ninth inning, allowing one run, for Bates (4-9). Shwartz pitched 8.1 innings and allowed one run on six hits and one walk while striking out five Beavers. Fellow senior Chuck Murphy-Romboletti came on to get the final two outs, preserving Bates' second win in the past three games.
Tom Beaton led off the first with a walk, and Pat Murphy drove him in with an RBI single for one run in the first. Bates scored three in the second as Gordy Webb walked, advanced on a Noah Burke single and scored on an error. Burke later scored on Mike Ciummei's groundout RBI. Beaton came on with the bases empty and two out and created a run with a walk, two steals and Murphy's second RBI single of the day.
Bates made it 5-0 in the fifth when Chris Burke singled, stole second and came home on Noah Lynd's RBI single.
The Beavers responded with a run in the sixth as Russ Schmelzer (Winthrop, ME) walked, stole second and came home on a single by Garneau.
Bates got the run back with one more score in the eighth, when Gordy Webb tripled and came home on an RBI single by Ciummei.
Bates collected 11 hits in the game, with Murphy, Ciummei and Webb all coming up with two hits. Beaton added a triple and two stolen bases.
