STANDISH -- After falling 5-1 in the opener, the University of Maine at Farmington baseball team recorded its first victory of the season with a 4-3 win over St. Joseph's College at Larry Mahaney Field today.

The Beavers improved to 1-5 with a twinbill against Thomas College at home on Wednesday. The first game is slated to begin at 1 p.m. The Monks stand at 16-9.
Craig Pendleton (Saco, ME) twirled a complete-game win, scattering seven hits with no walks and seven strikeouts, and RBI hits by Pat Howell (Nobleboro, ME) and Steve Hutchinson (Beverly, MA) highlighted a three-run fourth inning as the Beavers grabbed the nightcap, 4-3.
Howell and Josh Garneau (South Portland, ME) each slugged a single and a double for Farmington with Hutchinson and Connor McNeill (Portland, ME) each collecting a pair of hits. Mitch Bean (Old Orchard Beach, ME) had an RBI groundout in the third, while a Russ Schmelzer (Winthrop, ME) sacrifice fly in the sixth supplied necessary insurance as the Monks scored twice in the home half of the frame to make it 4-3.
In the nightcap, St. Joseph's starter Curtis Orlik (Brimfield, MA) was slapped with the loss in his first collegiate start and went three innings, allowing six hits and three runs with two K's in the 4-3 defeat. Eric LaBatte (Rochester, NH) was 2-3 with a double in the loss.
In the opener, Bill Ridge (South Portland, ME) took a tough complete-game loss as the junior held the Monks to five hits with four walks and three strikeouts, but St. Joseph's scored five unearned runs on three Farmington errors for the 5-1 win.
McNeill clubbed a solo home run for the Beavers.
Kyle Dorr (Berwick, ME) improved to 3-0 on the year after tossing six innings and allowing four hits and a run with four strikeouts.
