FARMINGTON -- Thomas College used late-inning efforts to tip the University of Maine at Farmington 8-2, 5-3 in a North Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader at Hippach Field today.
The Beavers dropped to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in the NAC, while the Terriers snapped a seven-game skid to improve to 3-19 (2-4). Farmington is scheduled to visit Lyndon State College on Saturday and Sunday for a four-game NAC set and Thomas is tabbed to face Castleton State College on Saturday and Sunday.
In the opener, the Terriers took advantage of three Farmington errors to score four runs in the sixth inning and posted three more in the seventh to seal the 8-2 win.
Tyler Hanson (Sanford, ME) and Connor McNeill (Portland, ME) each slugged a solo home run as the Beavers built a 2-1 edge through five innings. Russ Schmelzer (Winthrop, ME) also collected a pair of hits.
Dan Hemdal (Nashua, NH) took the loss with five hits allowed, three walks and five strikeouts over six innings of work.
Dana Leland (Alton, ME) singled in a run in the sixth and clubbed a two-run home run in the seventh to lead Thomas with Jared Fieldsend (Somersworth, NH) singling three times and plating and run and Tim Costa (Pelham, NH) singling a doubling.
Payton Austin (Lisbon, ME) grabbed the victory for the Terriers as the junior scattered six hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Adam Gilbert (Farmington, ME) hurled an inning of unblemished relief with one strikeout
In the second game, a two-run double by Nick Schauwecker (Yarmouthport, MA) highlighted a four-run seventh for the Terriers as Thomas rallied for the 5-3 win.
Hanson smacked a pair of solo home runs --finishing with three on the day-- for Farmington with Matt Levine (Pelham, NH) singling and homering.
The Beavers' Craig Pendleton (Saco, ME) was hit with the loss. The senior scattered seven hits with a free pass and three strikeouts over 6.1 innings. Bill Ridge (South Portland, ME) pitched the final two outs.
Schauwecker finished with a pair of hits with Josh Nickerson (Stockton Springs, ME) singling, doubling and driving in a run.
Ben Goodall (Norway, ME) pitched six innings for the victory with six hits allowed and a strikeout. Chris Farrar (Sidney, ME) earned the save with an inning of relief.
