LYNDON CENTER, Vt. -- The University of Maine at Farmington baseball squad split a North Atlantic Conference twinbill against Lyndon State College today at Skip Pound Field as the Beavers won the first game 10-5, but dropped the nightcap 5-4. Both games went into extra innings.
The Beavers stand at 2-8 overall and 1-3 in the NAC, while the Hornets sit at 4-20-1 (1-10). The two teams are scheduled to play another doubleheader Sunday. First pitch is on tap for noon.
In the opener, Farmington broke open a 5-5 tie with a five-run ninth inning rally to earn its first NAC victory of the season. Brian Jenkins (Gorham, ME) had three hits to lead the Beavers, while Russ Schmelzer (Winthrop, ME) and Kyle Shea (Bar Harbor, ME) chipped in two each.
Bill Ridge (South Portland, ME) got the win, allowing five earned runs on 11 hits while striking out 11 and walking three.
Maerder had three hits for the Hornets while Shawn Lonardelli and Ben Clark added two each. O'Donnell-Leach suffered the loss. He gave up four earned runs on nine hits while fanning three and walking two.
In game two, Jeremy Rochleau's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth plated Stetson Hicks with the game-winning run as Lyndon State managed a split.
Josh Garneau (South Portland, ME) drove in a pair of runs for the Beavers with Jenkins and Pat Howell (Nobleboro, ME) each tripling and Tyler Hanson (Sanford, ME) doubling.
Brian Morrison (Saco, ME) took the loss with three walks and seven strikeouts.
With the score tied at 4-4, Hicks singled to lead off the ninth for LSC and was bunted to second by Shane O'Donnell-Leach. That set the stage for Rochleau's heroics, which lifted the Hornets to their first NAC win of the season. Hicks had three hits in the contest, while Zach Maerder and Tyler Blake added two each.
